Gender Pay Gap
Updated: 7 September 2026
This page sets Cecilia Prize’s principles for fair compensation in work undertaken for the website. Pay decisions must not disadvantage a person because of sex, gender identity, pregnancy or caring responsibilities. Comparable work should be assessed using relevant, consistently applied criteria.
Fair decisions about compensation
The scope of an assignment, required skills, responsibility, complexity and agreed deliverables are relevant considerations. Assumptions about a person’s family role, willingness to negotiate or financial need are not a sound basis for reducing compensation.
Fees and important conditions should be clear before work is accepted. Changes to scope should be discussed explicitly rather than treated as an expectation of unpaid extra work. These principles apply to editorial and other services commissioned for Cecilia Prize.
Equal pay and pay-gap statistics
Equal pay for comparable work and an aggregate gender pay gap measure different things. A statistical comparison requires reliable information about the population, period and method used. A statement of principle cannot establish the numerical outcome of that comparison.
This policy is not a statistical pay-gap report, a certificate of equal pay or a claim that a workforce audit has been completed. Any numerical report must identify its scope and evidence. Applicable employment and reporting duties depend on the actual organization and the law that applies.
Fair consideration of concerns
A person raising a compensation concern in good faith should be treated respectfully. Assessment should focus on the work and relevant terms, protect unnecessary disclosure of personal information and avoid retaliation. A concern should not be dismissed because the person is a freelancer or works remotely.
Our Diversity Policy addresses wider principles of equal dignity and opportunity. The Statement Against Slavery explains the position against forced or exploitative work.
