Overview of Tula

Established in 2013, Tula is a skincare brand with a commitment to creating products devoid of harsh chemicals. Instead, they aim for natural ingredients known to enhance skin appearance, such as probiotic extracts and superfoods. The brand’s founder, Dr. Roshini Raj, is a practicing gastroenterologist with a keen interest in skin health. She noticed the positive impact of probiotics on her patients’ health and skin condition, which led to the creation of Tula.

Tula formulates its skincare products with various strains of probiotics to offer a broad spectrum of skin benefits. Preliminary research supports the effectiveness of these bacteria in promoting skin health. The Sanskrit word for “balance” is Tula, reflecting the brand’s mission to create products that promote healthier skin through nature’s power.

To ensure their products are safe and effective, Tula collaborates with reputable bioscience laboratories for product formulation and clinical testing. Their products are free from parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, sulfates, triclosan, formaldehyde, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, and retinol.

Is Tula Cruelty-Free?

Yes. Tula is a cruelty-free company, which means it does not engage in animal testing.

Probiotics in Tula Skincare

Every Tula product features probiotic extracts. These ingredients, commonly found in probiotic supplements, are believed to enhance skin health.

Lactococcus Ferment Lysate, derived from Gram-positive bacteria Lactococcus lactis, is purported to accelerate epidermal cell growth, increase cell turnover, and balance skin microbiota. This makes it beneficial for acne-prone and oily skin types. It also supports a healthy and moisturized skin barrier.

Bifida Ferment Lysate is supposed to shield the skin from UV damage. According to a particular study, it can also reduce skin sensitivity and aid in skin barrier repair.

It’s worth noting that Tula’s probiotic extracts do not contain live cultures; hence, refrigeration isn’t required. Tula posits that live cultures aren’t necessary to derive skincare benefits from probiotic extracts.

Superfoods in Tula Skincare

Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry) Fruit Extract: Improves skin texture.

Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract: Provides anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidant benefits, shielding the skin from free radical damage. Turmeric can regulate sebum production in individuals with acne.

Citrullus Lanatus (Watermelon) Fruit Extract: A potent antioxidant, rich in vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that aid in skin hydration.

Rosehip: Balances, firms, and smoothes skin.

The Tula skincare products fall within the moderate pricing range; however, costs can add up if you plan to purchase multiple products separately. This is where Tula’s skincare kit comes in handy, offering full-size, best-selling products at a discounted rate. The five-product kit currently sells for $138, compared to an individual product retail value of $184.

The Tula Glow Starts Here Bestselling Skin Essentials Kit features five of Tula’s best-selling products:

  • The Cult Classic Purifying Face Cleanser (6.7 oz)
  • So Polished Exfoliating Sugar Scrub (2.9 oz)
  • Get Toned Pro-Glycolic 10% Resurfacing Toner (3.0 oz)
  • Rose Glow & Get It Eye Balm (0.35 oz)
  • 24/7 Moisture Hydrating Day & Night Cream (1.5 oz)

This kit is an excellent investment for those aiming to revamp their skincare routine, including basic essentials such as a cleanser and moisturizer, as well as specialized treatment products like sugar scrub and glycolic acid toner.

Let’s now review these five products more in-depth:

Tula The Cult Classic Purifying Face Cleanser

The Tula The Cult Classic Purifying Face Cleanser contains probiotics to cleanse the skin gently without disturbing its delicate balance. Bifida Ferment Lysate, a probiotic extract, hydrates the skin and reduces inflammation. Camellia sinensis (green tea) leaf extract is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that protects the skin from environmental stressors. Blueberry extract nourishes the skin with essential nutrients for a fresh and radiant look, and turmeric extract supports a healthy skin barrier. The cleanser also features Cichorium Intybus (Chicory) root extract, an anti-inflammatory prebiotic that improves skin firmness and barrier function by soothing dryness and reducing transepidermal water loss.

Upon first use, the cleanser’s fragrance – a powdery floral scent reminiscent of an air freshener – is quite notable. Although washing off the gel cleanser should ideally reduce the scent, it lingers post-rinse. The cleanser effectively removes makeup, dirt, and oil, leaving the face feeling fresh instead of stripped or dry. However, the strong scent can be off-putting for those with sensitivities.

Although Tula prides itself on formulating clean skincare products, the cleanser’s heavy fragrance was a letdown and gave me second thoughts about trying the rest of the products. Fortunately, not all products in the Tula range have such a strong scent.

Tula So Polished Exfoliating Sugar Scrub

The Tula So Polished Exfoliating Sugar Scrub works by removing dry, dead skin cells to unveil a noticeably brighter, more evenly-toned, and smoother skin. It also helps eliminate excess oil and impurities without leaving the skin feeling dry or stripped.

The sugar scrub’s formulation includes sugar grains for gentle exfoliation, Lactococcus Ferment Lysate (a probiotic extract) to boost cell turnover and cleanse pores, lactic acid to remove dull, dead skin cells, and fruit enzymes from papaya and pineapple for a mild exfoliation. It also contains Vitis vinifera (grape) fruit extract, which provides antioxidant benefits.

While I had reservations about the scrub as I normally prefer chemical over physical exfoliation, the product surpassed my expectations. The sugar crystals, lactic acid, and fruit enzymes worked in harmony to gently exfoliate my skin without causing irritation or redness.

The scrub has a fruity pineapple fragrance, which is milder than that of the cleanser. The scent disappears once you rinse the scrub off your face. The sugar scrub considerably enhanced my skin’s texture, leaving it softer, smoother, and brighter. I appreciated the blend of physical and chemical exfoliants and the gentle, non-irritating nature of the scrub. As such, I plan to use it a few times a week in the morning to complement the exfoliating acids I apply a few nights each week.

Tula Get Toned Pro-Glycolic 10% Resurfacing Toner

The Tula Get Toned Pro-Glycolic 10% Resurfacing Toner is a skin exfoliator containing a 10% pro-glycolic complex. This complex includes a blend of the Lactococcus Ferment Lysate probiotic and chicory root prebiotic extracts, coupled with glycolic acid to exfoliate, smooth, and brighten the skin.

In addition to the pro-glycolic complex, the toner also features lactic acid for extra chemical exfoliation and sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid) for skin hydration. Blueberry fruit and turmeric extracts offer antioxidant benefits. Tremella fuciformis sporocarp extract, a moisture-retaining sugar molecule, hydrates the skin as effectively as hyaluronic acid.

Despite glycolic acid being the second most concentrated ingredient in the formulation, the toner does not feel like a 10% glycolic acid toner. Since Tula doesn’t disclose the precise quantity of glycolic acid in the toner (the 10% is a blend of probiotic and prebiotic extracts and glycolic acid), it’s safe to assume the concentration is significantly below 10%.

On application, I didn’t experience stinging, burning, or more than a slight tingling, which is unusual for me as my skin typically reacts to even 5% glycolic acid formulations. However, this is not to say that the toner was disappointing—quite the contrary. It’s perfect for someone with sensitive skin like mine, effectively targeting dullness and uneven skin texture and tone. This pH-balanced toner is gentle enough to replace your usual daily toner.

The manufacturer’s instructions suggest applying 1-2 pumps of toner to a cotton pad and then sweeping it across your face. However, due to the gel-like consistency of the toner, I found it more effective to pump the product onto my fingers and distribute it evenly across my face to avoid product wastage.

Tula Rose Glow & Get It Eye Balm

The Tula Rose Glow & Get It Eye Balm is Tula’s top-selling hyaluronic acid eye balm, designed to hydrate, tone, tighten, and brighten the delicate skin around the eyes. This version of Tula’s eye balm also includes rosewater and rosehip oil, known for their high fatty acid content. Blueberry extract hydrates and provides antioxidant protection, hyaluronic acid promotes hydration, and lactic acid gently exfoliates, alleviating the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Apple extract provides mild exfoliation. When combined with the apple and watermelon extracts, the lentil fruit extract forms a trio of moisturizers. According to the manufacturer, these, along with Sodium PCA & sodium lactate (also in this eye balm), form a complex called AcquaCell. This complex provides extended hydration and can help to reduce fine lines.

Tula recommends applying this eye balm under or over makeup and touching up as needed throughout the day. You can also use it as a highlighter on your cheekbones, nose, and anywhere else you need a quick brightness boost.

The eye balm is tinted a pale rose shade for a healthy glow. It hydrates well and creates a noticeable cooling effect around the eyes, leaving the skin bright, smooth, and plump. For an understated glow, I apply it after my eye cream and concealer. The result is a more alert look around my eyes, which is always appreciated.

Tula 24/7 Moisture Hydrating Day & Night Cream

The Tula 24/7 Moisture Hydrating Day & Night Cream is a lightweight yet deeply hydrating moisturizer formulated for day and night use.

Among the key ingredients are Bifida Ferment Lysate, which supports a healthy skin barrier, squalane for moisturizing, and chicory root, a prebiotic, for skin balance. Apple, lentil, and watermelon extracts, along with sodium lactate and sodium PCA, hydrate and smooth wrinkles and fine lines. Green tea extract, a skin-protecting antioxidant, offers anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial benefits.

Though designed for most skin types, this day/night cream may be too rich for those with combination, oily, or acne-prone skin. However, it is non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog pores. I think it is best suited for those with dull skin or mature or dry skin looking for anti-aging benefits and rich hydration.

As a person with combination skin, I found this cream more suitable as a night cream, as it left my skin excessively dewy for daytime use under makeup. For my skin type, this lightweight cream would be perfect for use during cool weather months or after using strong actives like retinol or AHAs, as it soothes my skin and provides excellent hydration and moisture.

The cream contains fragrance, which I am not fond of, but it’s not as strong as the cleanser’s scent.

Conclusion on Tula Skincare Products

Despite my initial skepticism regarding the skincare benefits of topical probiotics, my experience with Tula’s probiotic skincare products proved otherwise. These products are formulated to leverage the benefits of probiotics and effective actives like superfood extracts, gentle physical exfoliants, and chemical exfoliants such as glycolic acid and lactic acid. They target the signs of aging alongside other plant and fruit extracts.

I was particularly impressed with Tula’s exfoliating products. The sugar scrub offers gentle physical and chemical exfoliation, while the glycolic complex toner resurfaces my skin without the irritation and redness I usually experience with chemical exfoliants.
